How to Restore Headlights

Gather Your Materials

To restore your headlights, you’ll need:

• A headlight restoration kit (optional) or:

  • Sandpaper (400, 800, 1000, and 2000 grit)

  • Polishing compound

  • Microfiber towels

  • Masking tape

  • UV sealant or clear coat spray

• Bucket of water

• Spray bottle filled with water

Having all the materials prepared beforehand ensures a smooth and efficient restoration process.

Clean the Headlights

Begin by thoroughly washing the headlights with soap and water to eliminate dirt and grime. Use a microfiber towel to dry the surface completely. This step prevents debris from causing scratches during the restoration process.

Mask the Surrounding Area

Apply masking tape around the edges of the headlights. This protective measure shields your car’s paint from potential scratches or accidental damage while you work. Ensure the tape is securely in place to define a clear working area.

Sand the Headlights

Start sanding the headlights with 400-grit sandpaper. Wet the sandpaper and the headlight surface using water to minimize scratches and ensure a smoother process. Use consistent, circular motions, keeping the surface damp at all times. Progressively move to 800-grit, 1000-grit, and finally 2000-grit sandpaper, smoothing out imperfections with each pass. After sanding, clean the surface with a microfiber towel.

Apply Polishing Compound

Once the headlights feel smooth, apply a small amount of polishing compound to a clean microfiber towel. Use circular motions to work the compound into the surface. This step eliminates any residual haze and restores the headlights’ clarity. Use another microfiber towel to buff the surface until it shines.

Apply a UV Sealant

To maintain the clarity of the headlights and protect them from future damage, apply a UV sealant or clear coat spray. Follow the product’s instructions carefully to ensure an even application over the entire headlight surface. Allow the sealant to dry fully before exposing the headlights to water or direct sunlight.
